Where to Get Help

  • Your Mortgage Lender (also called the "servicer"): Your mortgage lender may have options to help you avoid foreclosure. Look for the telephone number of your mortgage lender on your mortgage statement or coupon book and call right away. How to prepare for the conversation with your lender.

  • Freddie Mac: Your lender should be able to tell you if your mortgage is owned by Freddie Mac. You may also use our secured look-up tool: Does Freddie Mac Own Your Mortgage? If your loan is owned by Freddie Mac, you are eligible to be considered for the President’s Making Home Affordable program. If not, go to Fannie Mae’s website to see if Fannie Mae owns your loan. If neither company owns your loan, call your servicer and ask if they offer the MHA program.

  • Housing Counselors:

    • Call the Homeowners HOPETM hotline at (888) 995-HOPE to reach trained housing counselors who can provide advice and help you develop a plan.

    • Call the U.S. Department of Housing & Urban Development (HUD) at (800) 569-4287 or visit their web site for a list of approved housing counselors by state.

    • Attend a foreclosure prevention workshop for homeowners sponsored by a community-based organization in your area. - New
