Memorial Day is a day of remembrance: We recognize those who have responded to the nation's call to serve and fight for our safety and freedom.
Here at home, Freddie Mac is committed to our service men and women. We understand that housing can be a significant issue for military families who frequently move, or for disabled veterans returning home.
Freddie Mac provides military relief options for service members and their families who have Freddie Mac-owned mortgages. We encourage servicers who handle these mortgages to offer our relief options and to leverage the Servicemembers Civil Relief Act.
This week, Freddie Mac launched a new Employee Resource Group: Military Service. The group plans to:
Through our volunteer program, our employees also take part in a variety of efforts to help veterans in our community. Recently, employees helped repair homes for veterans' widows (a partnership with Rebuilding Together) and made care kits for a D.C. veterans service center which provides housing, meals and other services. We also continue to collect frequent flier mile donations for Luke's Wings. (The not-for-profit buys plane tickets with the donated miles to help families of injured service members visit their loved ones during hospitalization and rehabilitation.)
Through our V.E.T.S. hiring program, we partner with the New York-company Sharp Decisions to hire service-disabled vets in IT – to help those who've served launch civilian careers. The veterans we’ve hired to do software testing include Ebony, a single Mom to an 18-month old, who recently returned from Iraq.
