On the 5th day of tips, bits & lists, we give graduates tips for improving their credit – or establishing it in the first place.

With graduation behind you or soon to be, you're probably thinking about other exciting milestones that may lie ahead. Good credit will help you reach them. Your credit history plays a big part in decisions around – for example – whether to make you that car loan, rent you that apartment, approve you for that home mortgage, give you that student loan to continue your education, or hire you for that job.

Zillow lists five steps toward a good credit history:

  1. Find out where you stand.
  2. Build a credit history.
  3. Research credit-card options.
  4. Use credit responsibly.
  5. Chip away at student loans.
