Creating Careers with Year Up

Since 2006, Freddie Mac has partnered with the nonprofit organization Year Up to jump-start the careers of urban young adults through an internship program in information technology (IT). The Year Up program provides Freddie Mac an opportunity to give back to the community by giving real-world business experience and training to young adults who otherwise might not have this opportunity. At the same time, the program provides us with another avenue for recruiting entry-level talent.

“The program enables us to invest in the next generation of IT professionals. And it gives smart, ambitious young people valuable career opportunities to achieve things they never thought possible,” said Stephanie Roemer, director of Freddie Mac's Office of Diversity and Inclusion (ODI).

Year Up strives to provide urban young adults with the access to the education, experiences and guidance required to realize their true potential. According to Year Up, six million young adults are disconnected from stable career pathways today; the next decade will see 12 million jobs requiring post-secondary education go unfilled. Year Up helps close the opportunity divide by offering low-income young adults, ages 18-24, a combination of hands-on skills development, coursework eligible for college credit, corporate internships, and wrap-around support.

Year Up works with Freddie Mac to understand the skills we need in the IT field and helps identify highly motivated individuals that would otherwise lack opportunities to enter the workforce. Upon joining Freddie Mac, interns are able to apply their skills and gain invaluable work experience. Since the start of the program, Freddie Mac has offered 266 internships, ultimately hiring nine former interns for full-time positions with the company in IT and Single-Family Operations. The company also brings back two interns from each group on average as contract workers.

During my nine years of working at Freddie Mac, I have been promoted, and received a B.S. in Computer Information Systems and a Masters in Information Systems Management. All of these accomplishments would've been much harder to attain if it wasn't for Year Up and Freddie Mac."
