Freddie Mac rung in the Year of the Dog with a Lunar New Year celebration at their headquarters in McLean, Virginia. The Freddie Mac Asians Supporting Inclusion and Awareness Network (ASIAN) has a long tradition of celebrating this festival as an opportunity for members to share their Asian cultural heritage, increase awareness of the Asian community and celebrate the cultural diversity at Freddie Mac.
This celebration of culture was new for event co–lead Lei Wang, who joined Freddie Mac in September 2017.
"During my corporate life, other companies embraced diversity, but they never celebrated it," said Wang, who started planning for the event in last December. "I thought that was normal, that you don't get to celebrate who you are. But at Freddie Mac, we're going the extra mile to celebrate our diversity and make sure that everyone is proud of their heritage. It was eye–opening for me."
The event featured a traditional Chinese lion dance, fashion show, and remarks from EVP and Chief Enterprise Risk Officer Anil Hinduja and SVP and Enterprise Operational Risk Officer Lin Lu.
"I think that leadership support is key to any diversity event," said co–lead Ridhika Laiker–Nayar, who signed on to help after seeing the success of the ASIAN ERG's Dwali and Eid Celebration last year. "We cannot be successful without leadership support. It aligns to the direction that the organization wants to go. We want to promote diversity and inclusion. We cannot do that without our leadership."
