Developers Deliver Their Best at Hackathon

Freddie Mac makes tech transformation a team sport. In a weekend-long Hackathon, hosted by the Single-Family Business Technology Office (BTO), 12 teams of developers competed to create new technology products designed to solve business problems.

Hackathons provide a hub for technological creativity and an opportunity for everyone involved to learn something new. Each team in the competition had to learn how to use Apigee, Google's cloud-based application programming interface (API) management platform, to build next generation API customer solutions. The tool enables developers to experiment with a new industry paradigm – API lifecycle management– making access to data that powers mobile and web applications much easier.

A Learning Mindset

The teams took existing solutions to the next level, powering them with better, cleaner and more integrated data, saving time and resources. While the top three teams took home prizes for their innovative work, all participants gained experience working in a modern, Agile environment that promoted an atmosphere of camaraderie and friendly competition.

"The challenge is to quickly adapt new technologies in an Agile environment," says Prasad Pinnamaneni VP & SDO, Single-Family Servicing & Risk. "The group organizers put the structure in place to create a fun and challenging experience. Forty-six participants executed on innovative ideas, while promoting teamwork and preparing for the new world of Modern Delivery."

The event provided a variety of learning opportunities and cloud-related training. Each Hackathon participant enjoyed engaging in intensive problem solving and working together in a new way using technology to provide business solutions.

"This challenge showed the Hackathon participants how inspiring it is to work together in small teams," says Ike Snyder VP & SDO, Single-Family Underwriting, "and use our creativity to build innovative products that help Freddie Mac make home possible and contribute to our customers' success."

In addition to the Single-Family BTO adopting three of the APIs created by Hackathon teams, others in IT are adopting cases as jumping-off points to solve challenges and build upon the experience.
