A Dream Come True: Virginia Condos Home to Nine Families

Freddie Mac and Habitat for Humanity recently welcomed nine families – first-time homeowners – to their new homes. Through Freddie Mac's partnership with Habitat for Humanity of Northern Virginia, our employees helped build the condos to provide affordable housing for low-income families.

Freddie Mac's Home Team volunteers have been a consistent presence at the Maple Ridge condominium construction, which began in June 2008. Employees framed units, installed drywall and experienced our mission first hand during monthly team builds and at MAC Week 2009, our "Make a Community" signature volunteer event.

"Building a house was such a raw and real experience," said Jessica Kabaz-Gomez, a Freddie Mac employee and Maple Ridge volunteer. "At the end of the day when I felt like I couldn't possibly hammer one more nail, I looked up at the three stories of framing my team and I helped put up, and couldn't help but feel proud."

The nine-unit Maple Ridge condominium complex marked its completion with a dedication ceremony attended by the new homeowners and their families, community representatives from Fairfax, VA, Habitat officials, employee volunteers, and Freddie Mac Director of Community Relations Anna Smith.

After living in a homeless shelter and then transitional housing, Luella and her son, Orlando, were excited when they learned early last year that Habitat for Humanity had chosen them as future homeowners at Maple Ridge. "This is a dream come true," said Luella, who hopes to one day become a private duty nurse caring for the elderly.

"The joy on a new homeowner's face is a powerful reminder of the importance of housing programs like Habitat for Humanity," said EVP of Community Relations Ralph Boyd, Jr. "I'm extremely proud of the work Freddie Mac and our employee volunteers do to make home possible for vulnerable children and families."
