MAC Month 2010: Helping to Make Communities Across the Nation

In recognition of Making a Community (MAC) Month, 700 employees donated more than 3,000 hours of their time to support the communities that Freddie Mac serves. During MAC Month, Freddie Mac employees revitalized a neighborhood in Northeast Washington, D.C., prepared meals for Fairfax County's underserved, and supported family shelters and those in need in various locations across the country.

"MAC Month allowed us to give back to underserved communities, here in our backyard and across the nation," said CEO Ed Haldeman. "Our rich philanthropic history is something we can all take special pride in."

In the D.C., area, employees helped revitalize the Ivy City neighborhood in Northeast Washington, taking part in the renowned Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter Work Project. Volunteers worked alongside Habitat for Humanity members to build and rehabilitate six homes, and Home Team volunteers will continue to help revitalize Ivy City in the years to come.

Make a Community Month

For those who wanted to help in Fairfax County, the Home Team Volunteer program partnered with Reston Interfaith to help prepare 920 meals, restore a playground, build a playhouse, and create fun festivals for underserved children living in transitional housing, and artwork for a learning center. There are more than 1,500 homeless in Fairfax County, a surprising fact to many who know the county as one of the nation's wealthiest.

"The importance of MAC Month in the community is very high. It allows Freddie Mac employees to give back to the community where they live and work," said Don Swartz, VP of Delivery Services and a frequent volunteer.

"You were able to impact about 1,000 people in a very positive way with the work that you did in this community."

Volunteer efforts also took place across the nation in our five regional offices. Employees from the Atlanta, Chicago, Dallas, New York, and Los Angeles offices supported their local communities by rehabilitating homes, painting a children's center, and preparing toiletry and new mom kits for those in need.

"Making a Community epitomizes Freddie Mac's deep commitment to supporting our neighborhoods," said Ralph Boyd, EVP of Community Relations. "I'm grateful to all of our employees who came together to support those who need us the most, here in the D.C. area and across the country."
