Making Progress
Since our creation in 1970, Freddie Mac's public mission has been to provide liquidity, stability and affordability to the U.S. housing market in all parts of the country and in all economic conditions. Never has this mission been more important than today.
In the midst of one of the worst housing crises in history, Freddie Mac has been a stable and constant source of mortgage funding, helping more than seven million American families own or rent a home since the beginning of 2009 when we were placed into conservatorship and given significant financial resources by the federal government. This financial assistance underscores the critical role we've been asked to play to continue to support the market and to help the housing sector recover.
What progress have we made during conservatorship?
- We're providing Mortgage Funding and continuous liquidity to the market. Together with Fannie Mae, we've funded the large majority of the nation's residential loans.
- We're insisting on Responsible Lending. The credit quality of our single-family loans today is strong, meaning we're putting families into homes they can afford and keep for the long term.
- To keep as many people as possible in their homes, we're focused on Managing Delinquencies. 3.5% of our loans are seriously delinquent, which makes our delinquency rate among the lowest in the industry.
- For those who can't or choose not to own a home, we're providing financing for Rental Housing, which keeps the apartment housing market liquid and rental options affordable.
- We're helping families with low and moderate incomes and those living in low-income or underserved areas obtain Affordable Housing either by owning or renting a home – and we're doing it in a way that's consistent with our safety and soundness.
- Across the country, we're helping hard-hit families avoid foreclosure and working to stabilize distressed neighborhoods through our Foreclosure Prevention efforts, including our own programs and the Administration's Making Home Affordable program.
