The figure includes matching funds for substantial tsunami relief donations made by Freddie Mac employees. "Freddie Mac is deeply saddened by the terrible tragedy of last week. Our hearts and prayers go out to the victims and families affected by the tsunami in South Asia, and we are doing all we can to support the ongoing relief and recovery efforts," commented Freddie Mac's Chairman and CEO Richard F. Syron. Soon after the tsunami hit, Freddie Mac made an initial donation of $100,000 to the American Red Cross to aid in relief efforts, but decided to give an additional $50,000 after seeing the scope of the devastation. In addition to the corporation's contributions, the Freddie Mac Foundation is contributing $100,000 to several children's-related charities that are aiding in the South Asia relief efforts. The Foundation also is matching dollar for dollar the substantial tsunami relief donations made by Freddie Mac employees, who to date have already contributed approximately $60,000. Freddie Mac is a stockholder-owned corporation chartered by Congress in 1970 to create a continuous flow of funds to mortgage lenders in support of homeownership and rental housing. Freddie Mac purchases mortgages from lenders and packages them into securities that are sold to investors. Over the years, Freddie Mac has made home possible for one in six homebuyers and two million renters across America. ###
