Washington, D.C. Apartments Get a Makeover
Residents beam with pride at ribbon cutting for renovated apartments
Built in the 1920s to provide housing for government workers, the original Dahlgreen Courts Apartment buildings in Northeast Washington, D.C. were in dire need of rehabilitation. Mission First Housing Development Corporation worked with Prudential Mortgage, Freddie Mac and other entities to obtain a financing package consisting of low income housing tax credits, historic tax credits and tax-exempt bonds.
The more than $20 million rehabilitation project upgraded all of the building systems and preserved many of the building’s historic elements, including hardwood floors and the building façade. The project preserved 96 units of affordable housing in the Brookland neighborhood. Freddie Mac spoke at the recent ribbon cutting ceremony where smiles on residents' faces showed the pride they have for their new homes.
