Hurricane Sandy Relief

Extending Relief to Homeowners Affected by Superstorm Sandy

If you are a homeowner impacted by Hurricane Sandy who lives in a declared major disaster area where individual assistance programs are available, we have extended a full range of mortgage relief options to help ensure you receive the assistance you need. Visit our Loan Look-up tool to see if Freddie Mac owns your loan and reach out to your servicer (the company to which you send your monthly mortgage payment) as soon as possible to learn more about options that may be available to you, such as:

  • Suspending or reducing your mortgage payments for 90 days, and depending on your situation, up to 12 months.
  • Expediting the distribution of your homeowner's insurance proceeds to help speed up repairs and assist with emergency cost-of-living expenses.
  • Suspending collection, foreclosure or eviction proceedings for up to 12 months depending on your situation.
  • Suspending foreclosure sales and eviction closeouts in areas declared major disaster areas through April 30, 2013.

Additionally, to help protect your credit through this difficult time we’re:

  • Waiving assessments of mortgage-related penalties or late fees.
  • Not reporting missed payment(s) or late charges caused by the disaster to the nation's credit bureaus.

Steps to Get Started

  • Visit our Loan Look-up tool to see if Freddie Mac owns your loan.
  • Find out if your area has been declared a major disaster and if individual assistance programs are available. To find out if individual assistance is available for your county, select your state’s ‘Major Disaster Declaration’ from the results on FEMA’s Disaster Declaration page, then select the “Designated Counties” link at left. The resulting page will inform you on whether or not individual assistance is available.
  • Reach out to your servicer as soon as possible to discuss your specific circumstance and learn more about available assistance options.
