Unite 5,000 employees and 15 nonprofits around a common goal of doing good over 31 days and you can make a real difference for families and neighborhoods. That's exactly what we plan to do in October during our inaugural Serve Call-to-Action volunteer initiative.
On the job or off, Freddie Mac employees have a long tradition of making a difference. It starts with their commitment to our housing mission that has made home possible for nearly 71 million families over the last 45 years. And it extends to giving freely of their time and talents, outside of the office, in the communities where they live and work.
Next month we take the opportunity to celebrate this commitment by launching the first of two yearly Serve initiatives with our volunteers – the Freddie Mac Community Crew. These month-long programs, each fall and spring, will offer employees a range of volunteer activities that support our important housing mission and our longstanding focus on improving financial literacy.
For October's Serve initiative, our Community Crew and nonprofits will work together to combat homelessness, support families transitioning to permanent housing, and build, rehab, and repair affordable housing in underserved communities. The month kicks off on our main campus in McLean, VA where we are partnering with Habitat for Humanity on a Build & Serve event for homeowners in Maryland. It will continue all month long – from Los Angeles to New York – with daily events that offer our Community Crew volunteers the opportunity to connect with our communities in four important ways:
- Build & Serve: Working at sites to build, rehab, and repair homes in underserved communities.
- Stop & Serve: Assembling welcome packages for families getting ready to move into their new homes.
- Give & Serve: Donating housing supplies for new and first-time homebuyers and those transitioning into permanent housing.
- Learn & Serve: Creating opportunities for employees to introduce the nonprofits they support to their colleagues so they can learn more about the nonprofit's mission and how to get involved that day and all year long.
I am proud that our people are passionate about giving back with their time and talents. When we help to strengthen communities around the nation, our company becomes more firmly rooted in these communities. It's a bond that makes Freddie Mac a better neighbor and a better company. And that's what October's Serve initiative is all about.
