New Duty to Serve Plan Supports Underserved Markets

December 18, 2017

Today, we published a comprehensive, three-year Duty to Serve plan for working with the mortgage industry, housing groups and other stakeholders. The plan addresses some of our nation’s most persistent housing challenges, focusing on three historically underserved markets:

  • Manufactured housing
  • Rural housing
  • Affordable housing preservation

We’ll focus on increasing liquidity and stability in these markets as well as developing new initiatives, ground-breaking research and consumer education. The cornerstone of our approach is partnership - with new and existing customers and with the dedicated organizations that are deeply knowledgeable about these markets. Here are a few highlights from the plan related to residential housing:

  • Increase support and liquidity for manufactured housing loan originators
  • Increase support and liquidity to high-need rural regions and populations
  • Support financing of energy efficient home improvements and the purchase of homes under shared equity programs

Freddie Mac is dedicated to helping more families with their housing needs, including supporting affordable housing and access to credit for very low-, low- and moderate-income households. Duty to Serve will allow us to further our efforts and may align with customers' Community Reinvestment Act needs by helping them reach more families in underserved markets across the country.
